SanDisk Partners with Stop Hunger Now to Package Meals Around the World

SanDisk engages staff in 5 states to complete their goal on November 12th
Stop Hunger Now and SanDisk have joined forces in the global fight against hunger.  On November 12th, SanDisk employees across the U.S. simultaneously packaged over 240,000 meals with their international nonprofit partner, Stop Hunger Now.
With the help of their global offices in India, Malaysia and China, more than 800 SanDisk employees will package and donate over 800,000 meals in 2015 alone.  Along with local hunger relief partners in Israel, Japan and Second Harvest Food Bank in Santa Clara, California, SanDisk is challenging their U.S. offices to take them over the finish line to package over one million meals.
Stop Hunger Now meal packaging events are volunteer-based programs that coordinate the streamlined packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables and 23 essential vitamins and minerals.
Hunger is an epidemic that affects 795 million people throughout the world. Every night, one in nine people around the globe goes to bed hungry. Over half are children.  In 2014, Stop Hunger Now fed 620,500 people through partners in 36 countries.
Gisela Bushey, Director of the SanDisk Foundation and Community Relations, notes that “Over the past 5 years, we targeted our grantmaking focus areas around K-12 education STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and children’s health and welfare.  However, how do you talk about academic progress with children when they are going to bed hungry? Or when their parents aren’t able to keep a roof over their heads?  It became abundantly clear to us that if we wanted to see progress in our focus areas, we needed to get involved in much more basic issues and at much earlier stages than before. Our partnership with Stop Hunger Now and our local food banks/pantries make it possible for SanDisk and our employees to join the fight to end hunger in our lifetime.”
“Hunger is a problem that can be solved, and represents the common thread among the world’s most challenging problems,” says Rod Brooks, Stop Hunger Now President and CEO. “Food creates hope for the most vulnerable among us, particularly women and children. It also is the key to ending poverty and disease, and providing the education and inspiration struggling people need to make a better future for themselves.”
Stop Hunger Now relies on partners like SanDisk to help achieve its mission of ending hunger in our lifetime. Since it launched its meal packing program in 2005, Stop Hunger Now has distributed more than 200 million meals in 71 countries. In 2014 alone, it engaged nearly 275,000 volunteers at meal-packaging events hosted in 16 countries.
“We are tremendously thankful for SanDisk’s leadership in the effort to end hunger,” says Rod Brooks, President and CEO of Stop Hunger Now. ” Engaging employees around the world to package meals for those need is a huge commitment and achievement. “
