Rise Against Hunger India Team
Dola Mohapatra is the Executive Director of Rise Against Hunger India. Mr. Mohapatra was assigned the responsibility in 2015 to establish the Indian regional hub for the organization’s meal packaging and meal distribution programs. He has been instrumental in building a strong foundation for the organization by designing and implementing some successful program models while working parallelly to obtain necessary government and regulatory approvals as well as setting in place the governance processes for the organization. Rise Against Hunger India is now a tax-exempt, FCRA certified organization (which gives its eligibility to receive overseas funds).
With rich and extensive experience in international and national NGOs spanning nearly 3 decades, Mr. Mohapatra has led large-scale program operations and developed program portfolio across the globe including India, USA, Thailand, East Timor, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and various other locations. He served as Regional Director of ChildFund International, as well as the CEO/Executive Director of ChildFund India in Bangalore. He is the co-founder of WorkMatterz, a Management Consulting firm that provides HR and Management support to startups, business enterprises, national and international non-profits. He has been living in Bangalore for over 15 years, serving the disadvantaged community and raising CSR funds for water, sanitation, education and health projects.
Mr. Mohapatra graduated with an MA in English Literature from Sambalpur University, a MSW in Labor Law from Santiniketan (Visva Bharati), and a MPhil in Social Work from University.
Naomi Joshua’s primary responsibility entails directing, managing, overseeing and mentoring our ever-growing community engagement team located across the country. She is also responsible to develop robust operational systems and guidelines, and ensure that everyone in Rise Against Hunger India fully trained in meal packaging, storage and distribution standards. She also looks after HR and people matters for Rise Against Hunger India.
Naomi has been actively involved with Rise Against Hunger India’s activities as a core volunteer since the day India program was launched in 2015. Later in 2018, she took up a part time assignment handling HR and Operations.
Naomi has over 25 years of experience in Operations, HR & Project Management. As the operations manager and team leader in her previous assignments, she has helped in designing operational systems, developing manuals, tools and guidelines for an organization that grew almost 200% within 3 years. Due to her excellent organizational capabilities, she was nominated to be part of an international task force that conducted organizational diagnostics in various countries in Asia.
Naomi holds a post-graduate diploma in HR Management, a post-graduate diploma in Systems Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Electronics & Mathematics.
Music is Naomi’s passion – she has been part of music groups & choirs all her life.
As the Volunteer engagement manager, Sudhir’s primary role is to ensure that volunteers who participate in our programs are provided with the best experience during their engagement with us. This primarily involves smooth facilitation of meal packaging and other volunteer engagement initiatives organized with corporate partners, civic groups or other platforms. Sudhir also works in enrolling new volunteers to participate in our hunger-action projects.
Sudhir comes with over nine years of fundraising and marketing experience including both fund development and communication. He has raised funds from a variety of marketing channels for causes such as protection of children’s rights, care for people living with leprosy, and people who are physically challenged. As part of his job assignment, he has handled multiple functions such as direct donor acquisition, data mining, brand creation, collateral development, lead generation, and donor engagement strategies.
Shaiju RG, is our Mumbai region in-charge for facilitating and managing Rise Against Hunger activities. This entails conducting meal packaging events; building/cultivating relationship with donors and volunteers; ensuring programs and projects are effectively implemented with local partners and exploring new opportunities for growing Rise Against Hunger India’s outreach in the region.
Shaiju comes with long experience in administration, logistics and supply chain, event management including fundraising & campaign coordination. Most recently, he was involved in raising funds for hunger and malnutrition related activities with World Vision.
Originally from Kerala, Shaiju completed his graduation and post-graduation in Social work from Tamil Nadu Open University and then moved to Mumbai. He has been working in the social sector since 2004.
Shaiju and his wife Blessy have two sons Abel and Adon who are also part of his journey to work with the under-privileged.
As Donor Engagement Manager, Vignesh’s primary role involves cultivating new donors, individuals and corporate, to accelerate Rise Against Hunger India’s hunger action activities. He is also responsible for donor servicing and compliance. While directly raising funds and soliciting donations, Vignesh is also responsible for supervising the fundraising executives who are engaged in various fundraising activities.
Vignesh is a fundraising professional and has several years of experience with organizations like Plan India & Amnesty International in individual fundraising including direct and corporate marketing. He has worked on various fundraising verticals such as tele-marketing (Acquisition and Retention), face-to-face marketing, outreach marketing & branding in public events. He has raised funds individually as well as with teams.
Vignesh has a B.Tech degree in Information Technology from Anna University. He has also volunteered for the Tamil Nadu AIDS awareness program.
Vignesh is married and lives with his wife in Bangalore.
Mohar is responsible for design and implementation of Rise Against Hunger India’s programs. This includes, among other things, developing project ideas focused on achieving sustainable livelihood & food security, and identifying collaborative partnership opportunities for effective execution of such projects. Mohar also manages our safety-net program (provision of meals and other direct services) to those in need including communities facing crisis.
Mohar has worked as Senior Programme Manager at BAIF Development Research Foundation where he has worked on creating livelihood opportunities for youth by training them as Artificial Insemination Technicians, under project awarded by Bihar Livestock Development Agency (BLDA). He has also worked on improving the development potential of women and children under a consortium project funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and led by Tata Cornell Institute at Munger, Bihar. The focus of the project was better access and availability of water and nutrition to address issues of lack of micro-nutrients and stunting. Mohar has also worked on promotion of sustainable agricultural practices to address climate change and reduce carbon footprint at Nalanda, Bihar. This project was in collaboration with the Borlaug Institute of Sustainable Agriculture (BISA).
Mohar is an alumni of the esteemed Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA). Before moving to social sector, Mohar has worked for about 5 years in the Information Technology sector as a Business Analyst.
Rise Against Hunger India Trustees & Adv Board
Hatim is a founding trustee and the Settler of Rise Against Hunger India. Hatim works for Cisco Systems as IT Operations Manager and Global Extranet Service Manager. Hatim has been with Cisco Systems India managing IT Infrastructure Services for Cisco’s Offshore Development Centers which is spread across 500 offshore sites globally. With an overall experience of about 16 years, Hatim has held various roles on IT Enterprise Infrastructure built for Cisco offices across India & SAARC; managed various IT Acquisition Integrations and also played Client Experience Lead role for Cisco India.
Over and above his full time job, Hatim leads Cisco Connected Disability Awareness Network (CDAN) for APJC (Asia Pac, Japan & Greater China), an Employee Resource Organization (ERO), which supports Disability within the Organization as part of Cisco’s Inclusion and Collaboration Organization. Leading CDAN is not just a responsibility for him but is his passion and takes pride in being part of the CDAN APJC community as he is able to connect and fulfill the needs of the differently-abled to build Assistive Technologies with a lot of focus on Accessibility to be integrated into Cisco Products. Apart from focus on Assistive Technologies, he also helped in introducing other tracks in CDAN community like Partnering with External Organizations, PWD Forum, PWD Talent Acquisition, Inclusive Environment and Disability Awareness.
Hatim is very passionately involved in other Giving Back activities & events including mobilizing and leading an active citizen support group in his neighborhood apartment association that conducts a number of volunteering activities from time to time.
Hatim is a successful entrepreneur dealing with real estate, mall-management and other ventures. His company, Integrated Mall Management & Retail Solutions, works in many locations in southern India providing onsite management to many well-known malls, properties and commercial hubs.
Hatim is an inspirational leader who takes personal interest in social activities that uplift the deprived population. He spends personal time in various humanitarian activities. He travels extensively on work and has gathered wide-range experience in diverse areas. His passion is visible during volunteering activities where he puts his heart and soul.
An MBA graduate from a leading management institute in India, Hatim has previously worked with one of the major private banks of India. Originally from Mumbai, he has now made Bangalore his home. He is a serious long-drive enthusiast and is planning to do cross-country driving from Kanyakumari to Kashmir to beat the current record.
Mary Paul, is a veteran social work practitioner and a well known counselor. She has been a recipient of the Sadguru Gnanananda National award for excellence in social service in 2002.
Mary was the Founder Director of Vathsalya Charitable Trust, a prominent child welfare agency that worked with adoption and foster care as its major programs for nearly 2 decades. She took a break from Vathsalya in 1991 to spend more time with family during which time she founded an organization named Kutumba , a group foster care institution for the disabled. Kutumba offers residential services to physically challenged girls from the rural areas of the four southern states of India. The children and youth are sent to appropriate centers for skill training and their emotional care and nurture is provided at the Home. Kutumba also runs a music school for the economically under-privileged, a daycare program for preschoolers and a vocational training program for under privileged women.
Mary is a post graduate in social work from Bangalore University, with Diplomas in secular and Christian counseling. She lives in Bangalore with her family.
Vineet Handa, is the founder of Kaizzen Communications a reputed PR, Marketing and Communications enterprise in India which he launched in 2008.
Vineet brings with him a vast and multifaceted experience and relationships in the areas of financial services, lifestyle, Retail, IT, Healthcare, Energy, Trade, Real Estate Sustainable Development and Research. His penchant for entrepreneurship struck once again in the year 2010 when he founded another successful company specializing in experiential marketing and events management in the name of Craftsman Solutions Pvt Ltd. In 2017 he became instrumental in leading yet another venture with his investments in a young, emerging advertising firm called OFactor Communications.
With the learning’s from these three successful ventures and decades of experience in the field of Communications, he took lead in a study project with EY (A leading consulting firm) on Sports development and its impact on livelihood in North Eastern Indian states.
A career with over 18 years of journey in Public Relations, Brand Communication and Outreach had started with a tenure at ABCL way back in 1997. Before the formation of Kaizzen, Vineet served a two years term as Associate Director, TERI “The Energy and Resources Institute” Delhi, and held various senior positions at Genesis BursonMarsteller and CMCG – two of India’s leading communications companies.
As part of his long-term career as a communications professional, Vineet has handled various high-profile relationships, crisis and communications for events and corporates alike. Some of them are ESPN Star Sports, Channel V, HBO, Cartoon Network, National Geographic Channel, BBC, UCB, ICL, IIFA Awards, Yale University, HP, Accenture, Ericsson, Sony, Sony Ericsson, GSK, Lakme, Bridal Asia, Tag Huer, Christian Dior etc. Due to the immense value and insight he has brought into the field of communication, brand building and PR, Vineet has been honored as top 100 PR professional of India. Under his able leadership, Kaizzen has won many awards over past few years.
A science graduate with a post graduate education in International Business Management, Vineet is the complete package of Marketing prowess, dynamic personality and a poised, confident attitude that makes for an efficient leader.
John Rodrigues is a qualified Chartered Accountant and is a Fellow member (FCA) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. John has worked in multinational companies within Telecom, Accounts and Auditing in India. Currently John has been practicing full time and owns the audit firm John Rodrigues & Associates, based in Bangalore. He has successfully handled major projects from its inception to steady state. John’s special expertise is in Audits & Statutory Compliance, Taxation, Process management, MIS Management, Overall Governance, Training & Recruitment, P&L Management, and Due Diligence. John led a substantial project for re-modelling the development of automated financial management solution system for Govt.of Karnataka’s prestigious Treasury Department. This was one of the outstanding achievements of CA John Rodrigues.
John has done Business Management from Mangalore University and qualified his chartered accountancy in the year 2001.
Ray Buchanan: A vision to end world hunger
In 1998, envisioning a world without hunger, Ray Buchanan — a United Methodist minister — founded Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now). After enlisting as a U.S. Marine during the Vietnam War, Ray Buchanan quickly recognized that accomplishing a mission required “commitment to something larger than yourself.” Over the past three decades, that principle has driven Ray’s mission to eradicate world hunger.
As a divinity graduate student at Duke University, Ray began working with the poor and hungry. He continued that work at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he received his master’s degree in divinity, and as a pastor at five rural United Methodist churches in Virginia. As a pastor, Ray joined the effort to save the lives of starving Ethiopians during the 1973-75 famine in Ethiopia.
Driving Ray’s hunger work is the recognition that “ending hunger is more than just feeding people.” So Rise Against Hunger “focuses its feeding programs in areas where we can see transformational development,” he says.
Ray embodies the ideal of a servant leader. And he understands that volunteers and organizations working together can build a global movement that will stimulate the political will to marshal the resources that are essential — and available — to eradicate hunger.
Rise Against Hunger has realized positive, annual growth mainly through expansion of the meal packaging program into new communities. Rise Against Hunger continues to further Ray’s legacy of commitment both to domestic and international crisis response including relief from famine, natural and manmade disasters and health epidemics.
