Broadening Our Impact and Exploring New Pathways to End Hunger

Over the years, the organization has gone through several rounds of changes.  However, through all these years, our mission remains the same: We continue to serve the world’s most vulnerable communities with a goal of ending world hunger. The scope of our impact, however, is widening, as we continue to grow our assistance to help those populations most in need.

As we enter this new chapter, we are focusing on four pathways to ending hunger: nourishing lives, empowering communities, responding to emergencies and growing the movement. Through these pathways, we aim to not just build self-sufficiency and resilience in communities that are food & nutrition insecure, we also engage wider segments of population to participate in hunger-elimination activities through active volunteering.

Nourishing lives is accomplished through meeting the most basic and immediate needs of vulnerable families and individuals. At Rise Against Hunger India, we support safety net programs that provide nourishment and other services to support the difficult journey out of poverty. We partner with local organizations, especially schools, in order to distribute our meals.  This encourages increased enrollment and attendance for young students — especially girls — in vulnerable communities. Partnerships with hospitals and clinics allow increased nutrition for patients to complete their treatments. By providing meals to the world’s most vulnerable populations, we are able to serve the nutrients people need to reach their full potential.

To create long-term solutions to hunger and poverty, Rise Against Hunger India works to empower communities through agriculture and income-generating initiatives. Because farmers are some of the most food-insecure members of society in developing countries, we work to increase agricultural production and incomes through programs promoting improved agricultural methods, business skills and market access. We assist farmers in increasing their production and diversifying their crops by providing access to quality seeds and fertilizers. We also aid in the establishment of fish and livestock production which, in turn, diversifies diets and improves nutritional outcomes of the community. Rise Against Hunger supports vocational training programs that help at-risk individuals increase their earning potential and consistent access to food.

Food and other aid are especially critical in times crisis. An important aspect to our commitment to end world hunger is responding to these emergencies. Rise Against Hunger India works to respond to sudden and ongoing crises in order to meet the needs of the affected populations and assist in the work toward recovery. We do this through delivering immediate and ongoing nutritional food assistance, water filters and hygiene kits to those displaced by natural and man-made disasters and crises. In communities chronically affected by natural disasters, we also work towards building coping capabilities and resilience among the communities.

Hunger elimination needs to become a movement, and everyone can play a role in creating a hunger-free world.  Every year thousands of volunteers join us as volunteers to actively participate in our hands-on meal packaging program. As volunteers start engaging with us, they start playing wider role as hunger champions making changes around them promoting conscious consumption and active citizenry in their surrounding – thus growing our hunger-action movement.

Focusing our impact in these pathways allows us to efficiently execute and bring greater, sustainable change to those communities in need while building a movement for everyone to add their bit to a hunger-free world.
